Patient involvement in guidelines - the experience with the ASH pediatric VTE guideline

Sara Vesely.

Abstract

Patient involvement in Guidelines is important and reflects the shared decision-making between patients and clinicians. The American Society of Hematology (ASH) 2018 Guidelines of Management of Venous Thromboembolism: Treatment of Pediatric Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) involved patient representatives. ASH uses the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach when creating guidelines. The GRADE approach includes assessing the evidence and using the GRADE Evidence-to-Decision frameworks to make recommendations. The Evidence-to-Decision framework includes information about the evidence as well as other factors that such as outcome importance, acceptability and feasibility that are more subjective. These are factors that are enhanced by the expereince and input of patient representatives.
